History

The princess cut diamond is a relatively new diamond cut with it’s inspiration drawn from the ‘Barion Cut’. In 1979, a group of three pioneers; Ygal Perlman, Betzlel Ambar and Israel Itzkowitz engineered the ‘Quadrillion Cut’. This square shaped diamond consisted of 49 facets that created a 4-arm star effect in the centre of the diamond. Israel Itzkowitz continued to develop and refine this cut until he reached the incredible creation of the princess cut diamond that we know today.

Features

The princess cut diamond is also known as ‘Square Modified Brilliant’. Shaped as an inverted pyramid, The front view features a structured square silhouette and beautiful clean corners.

The symmetry of the larger facets in this princess cut diamond is easily visible. The diamond also has a desirable balance of light and dark areas.

The princess cut diamond permits a high return of light as it's open table and unique facet placement allows for exceptional light performance. When the symmetry of the princess cut diamond is excellent, the fire and brilliance produced is extraordinary!

Favoured among diamond cutters for its minimal rough wastage, the princess cut conserves up to 70% of the diamond’s rough. Other cuts such as the round brilliant cut diamond will retain approximately 50 %.

Are there different types of princess cut diamonds? Yes!

A princess cut diamond doesn’t come with a cut grade on it’s GIA certificate, so it’s important to know how the diamond has been cut. On the diamond grading report, you will see a diagram of the diamond which shows you the diamond's facet pattern. The two below diagrams demonstrate examples of the different facet patterns a princess cut diamond can have.

The pavilion refers to the lower half of the diamond. A princess cut diamond can be cut with two, three or four chevrons in the pavilion. Checking how many chevrons your princess cut diamond has will give you a very good indication of the diamond's light performance. Simply, the more facets the diamond has, the more surfaces light has to bounce off.
