What Makes a Diamond So Strong? The Story Behind a Diamond's Resilience

Beyond the extraordinary beauty of diamonds, is their extraordinary and fascinating strength. A reminder that diamonds are not simply symbols of love or luxury,  that they are in fact one of the hardest natural materials on Earth.

Let’s talk about why.

Diamond’s on Mohs Scale of Hardness 

A diamond is the epitome of beauty and durability at once, as one of the hardest naturally occurring substances known to man. On the Mohs Scale of hardness, diamonds rank a perfect 10. That means they can scratch every other natural material, but almost nothing can scratch them. It’s this unrivalled hardness that makes them not only breathtaking in jewellery, but also incredibly useful in industrial tools designed to cut through stone, metal and even other diamonds.

What Gives Diamonds Their Incredible Strength? 

A diamond is composed of carbon, yet its elegance and resilience come from how its atoms are arranged within the diamond's structure. In a diamond, carbon forms a three-dimensional lattice, each atom connecting to four others. This creates a rigid, three-dimensional lattice that extends throughout the entire crystal. This lattice is incredibly stable and uniform, making it extremely difficult to disrupt. The strength of these interlocking bonds gives diamonds their unmatched hardness and exceptional resistance to scratching or breakingThis exquisite internal structure creates one of the strongest bonds out of any materials in existence, giving diamonds their extraordinary hardness and resistance to scratching. 

Born Under Pressure

Diamonds are geological masterpieces shaped over billions of years. Formed deep within the earth's mantle at around 150 - 200 kilometres below the surface, carbon atoms are subjected to extraordinary heat and pressures. Diamonds undergo tremendous pressures of 45-60kB. Forces are so immense they are the equivalent to millions of kilograms pressing down or 50,000 times the pressure experienced on the earth’s surface. Under these extreme conditions and temperatures between 1300-9000 degrees celsius is where Carbon undergoes its fascinating transformation.  The carbon atoms bind together to form the crystalline structure of a diamond rough.

In the earth’s extraordinary depths is where a diamond truly comes to life through its remarkable formation. It endures to become one of the rarest and most coveted gemstones in the world. 

Diamonds Can Endure Extremes 

Diamonds are remarkably enduring, a quality that derives from their precise and tightly bonded atomic structure. This structure allows them to maintain their integrity under conditions that would destroy most other elements.  

  • Diamonds have extremely high thermal conductivity, enabling them to disperse heat rapidly and efficiently. This prevents any localised damage from intense temperatures. 

  • Diamonds can withstand temperatures of 700 - 800°C before showing signs of damage or burning. A range far beyond what most other elements can withstand. 

  • In addition to heat resistance, diamonds are also incredibly resistant to chemical damage. They do not easily react with acids, or other corrosive substances. 

This combination of heat tolerance and chemical resistance makes diamonds one of the most resilient materials on earth. 

Diamond Tools for Industry

Diamonds are so strong that they’re relied on for industrial use. Thanks to their exceptional hardness, diamonds are widely used to cut, grind, and drill other materials that would quickly wear down ordinary tools. Diamond-tipped saw blades slice through concrete and stone, even solid rock. Precision diamond tools are used to shape glass, ceramics, and even other gemstones. This remarkable cutting ability comes from the diamond’s tightly bonded carbon structure which makes it the hardest naturally occurring material on Earth, strong enough to shape materials that would otherwise resist nearly anything else.

Strength of Diamonds

Diamonds are the embodiment of resilience. Born under unimaginable temperatures and pressure, they emerge stronger than anything around them, transforming light into something transcendent. They are not simply beautiful. Diamonds are extraordinary. Diamonds capture the very essence of strength and brilliance, and perhaps that is why we are entirely captivated.
