How to Keep Your Diamonds Sparkling All Holiday Season

There’s something so magical about the Christmas season, the decorations, beautifully wrapped presents, evenings spent with friends and family, and of course the outfits. December is the month when everything sparkles a little more, and your diamonds should be no exception.

Your diamonds deserve to shine just as brightly as the season itself.

Whether it’s your engagement ring, a pair of delicate diamond studs, tennis bracelet or that statement cocktail ring you save for special occasions, let’s talk about how to keep your diamonds bright and absolutely breathtaking all season long.

1. Glam First, Diamonds Last

During the Christmas season we’re often getting ready for more events and adding more beauty products to our routine. Whilst lotions, fake tan, body oils, perfume, makeup, powders and hairspray leave our skin glowing and hair shining to look its very best, it’s the opposite for your diamonds. All of these products can leave a residue on your jewellery and dull your diamonds, muting their brilliance.

Our holiday rule:
Wear your diamonds as the final addition to your outfit.

Place your ring on after the ritual of your beauty routine and putting on your perfect outfit.

2. A Gentle Clean

A regular clean is the simplest way to maintain your diamond sparkle and give them a little TLC.
We recommend to our clients to bring their diamonds to JANAI for a deep clean every 6 months. For our valued clients we offer complimentary professional cleaning as often as they like. This service is ideal before an event such as a party or Christmas Day to be extra eye-catching for the season.

For those JANAI clients who are unable to visit. It’s possible to clean your engagement ring at home with a gentle wash using warm soapy water and a soft cloth.

What you’ll need to clean your diamonds at home:

  • A bowl of warm water

  • A drop of mild dish soap

  • A gentle soft toothbrush

  • 30 minutes

It is recommended to soak your diamond pieces in warm water for 20 to 30 minutes with a mild dish soap. To remove residue, delicately brush the diamond ring with a very gentle soft toothbrush, then rinse with clean warm water. When drying, use a soft cloth to polish or let it air dry. It’s the quickest way to bring back that brilliant sparkle.

3. Diamonds and Cooking Don’t Mix

The holiday season means plenty of hosting, cooking and entertaining. All of which are activities that will quickly dull a diamond. Baking and decorating cookies is joyful and very festive, but between the flour, eggs, butter, and icing things can quickly get messy. Instead we recommend removing your diamond rings on these occasions.

We suggest to take your ring off during:

  • Cooking

  • Baking

  • Lifting heavy pots or serveware

  • Washing dishes

If you’re cooking or cleaning, take your ring off. Not only does it protect the diamond and keep your jewellery clean, it also avoids accidental knocks on pots, pans or trays and will avoid any buildup from ingredients around the diamond setting.

Place a pretty ring holder near your kitchen sink or on your benchtop so you always have a safe spot to keep it whilst cooking.

4. Decorating Needs a Little Care

It’s easy to adore a beautifully styled Christmas tree and festively decorated home. Yet setting up can be a surprisingly risky moment for your diamond jewellery. Tinsel, baubles, garlands and fairy lights can easily snag on ring claws or settings, and catch on diamond bracelets. Amidst Christmas decorating, it’s so easy for a diamond jewellery to even slip off without noticing.

Lifting any heavy boxes filled with decorations also places unnecessary pressure on diamond rings, risking damaging or scratching the piece.

Our holiday tip:
Give your diamonds a pause from wear whilst decorating for Christmas.

It’s a tiny thing that may save a holiday heartbreak.

5. Travelling Precautions

For those travelling and booking trips over the holiday season, we recommend taking extra care with your diamond rings. Whether you choose to take your diamonds along with you or leave them at home is a personal choice.  It’s worth considering your destination and the activities that you have planned to decide what is appropriate.

Keep in mind before travelling:

  • Destinations with high humidity can cause 18ct gold to develop a slight naturally occurring tarnish due to the change in climate

  • We strongly advise taking off your diamond jewellery before swimming in the pool or ocean (cold water can cause fingers to shrink and a ring to fit more loosely, and pool chemicals such as chlorine are never a good match for fine jewellery)

  • Check your travel insurance to see if your diamond jewellery is covered against loss, damage or theft

This way you protect your precious jewellery, keeping it safe and sparkling.

6. Store Them Like the Treasures They Are

When the festivities wind down, how you store your diamond rings and jewellery matters just as much as how you wear them. Diamonds are the hardest gemstone, but they can still scratch other jewellery if they’re placed all together in a drawer.

Our festive tip:

  • Give your diamond ring its own dedicated box or compartment

  • Store each piece separately

  • Never leave diamond jewellery inside a purse

  • Avoid letting rings sitting against each other and pendants/bracelets tangling together

It’s an elegant habit that keeps your diamonds pristine and ready to sparkle for every celebration.
