How to Clean Earrings

Noticing your earrings are looking dull and lifeless? Over time, even the most exquisite earrings can lose their sparkle as they are dulled by daily wear. The accumulation of dust, dirt and oils will inevitably diminish their shine. But don’t worry - when this happens, your beloved earrings don’t need to be relegated to their jewellery box forever. With a few simple steps, you can revive their brilliance and bring them back to life once again!

Discover our simple step-by-step guide below on how to clean your earrings and restore their lustre and sparkle!

Why Earrings need cleaning

Earrings, like all other fine jewellery pieces, tend to accumulate dirt, oils and other residues that can diminish their appearance. These elements naturally build up as the earrings come into contact with your skin's oils, hair products and daily environmental pollutants. After some time, you may find your earrings looking a bit darker, duller or don’t quite have the same glisten that they used to. Regular cleaning not only restores their appearance back to the vibrancy they once had but also helps maintain the integrity of the gold and precious stones.

The best methods for cleaning each type of Earring

Each type of earring will require a slightly different method depending on the precious stones they feature and their design. We explain the best methods for each here:

Diamond Earrings

Diamond Earrings are among the most spectacular. Diamond earrings come in various styles, such as hoops, studs, chandeliers and drop earrings.  A diamond’s unique ability to capture and reflect light in enchanting ways makes for many breathtaking designs. Before you get started - be sure you inspect your diamond earrings carefully and take a closer look to check their condition. Pay particular attention to the claws surrounding the precious stones to make sure they are held securely. If you notice they are not firmly in place, take your earrings to your jeweller to be professionally inspected before you follow these steps below.

Here's how to clean your diamond earrings:

1. Prepare a Solution: Mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water in a bowl
2. Soak the Earrings: Place your diamond earrings in the solution for about 20-30 minutes to loosen any dirt and oils
3. Gently Brush: Use a soft toothbrush to gently brush the diamonds and surrounding the platinum or gold, focusing on the claws or intricate details where debris tends to accumulate.
4. Rinse Thoroughly: Rinse the earrings under warm running water to remove any remaining soap and residue.
5. Dry and Polish: Pat the earrings dry with a microfibre cloth and give them a gentle polish to enhance their shine.

Gemstone Earrings

Gemstone Earrings are admired for their vivid colours. Featuring precious stones such as Sapphires, Rubies, Tanzanites, Tourmalines or Emeralds. Gemstone earrings require careful attention and certain stones can be more sensitive to chemicals or anything abrasive.
Before cleaning your earrings, check the stone type. It's essential to identify the gemstone set within the earrings to ensure it can withstand the following cleaning method. Softer stones such as opals and emeralds require extra care. If you’re unsure, contact our friendly team who can advise on how to clean gemstone earrings safely.

Pearl Earrings

Pearl earrings are nature's treasures, exuding an elegant and sophisticated charm. Unlike most precious stones which are formed within the earth, pearls are created within the depths of the oceans. Their soft iridescent glow reflects a spectrum of delicate colours, possessing a serene shimmer.

Cleaning Pearl Earrings
Pearls are extremely delicate and require special care to maintain their lustrous surface. Never submerge pearl earrings in hot water or place them within an ultrasonic cleaner to avoid damaging them! Instead, here’s how to clean your pearl earrings:

1. After each wear, use a soft microfibre cloth to gently polish the pearl earrings. This will help remove any natural oils from your skin and remove any dust or dirt from the pearls.
2. When looking dull, wipe with a damp cloth: Use a soft cloth with a drop of clear mild soap to gently wipe the pearls. Don’t make them too wet as pearls are porous and can absorb water and colour.
3. Dry thoroughly: Lay the pearls flat to air dry completely before storing them away to preserve and maintain their lustre and not to damage the surface.

How often should you clean your earrings?

Routine cleaning is essential for keeping your earrings in great condition, yet how often you should clean them is a matter of debate. It all depends on the precious stones they feature and how often they’re being worn. If you’re wearing them daily, the exposure to dust, dirt and pollution will inevitably build up more quickly and we recommend a weekly clean to bring them back to their usual brilliance.

Depending on your skin type and climate/environment, your earrings may be exposed to more pollutants, natural oils and sweat. Which lends these earrings to require more frequent and thorough cleans. However, if you reserve a pair of earrings for special occasions only and wear them for just a few hours, you can afford to wait until you notice a more visible change in their appearance before cleaning.

Maintaining the shine

Remember to always handle delicate stones and intricate settings with care to avoid any damage! We advise you to store your jewellery in a safe and dry place. Ideally you should keep your earrings in their own jewellery box (or at least their own compartment) that is lined with a soft fabric such as microfibre or silk/satin. This will prevent any scratches from other jewellery pieces keeping them in pristine condition.

We also recommend removing your earrings in situations where they may come into contact with harsh chemicals (such as at the hair salon where they may come into contact with bleach or amonia - which can corrode metals or dull gemstones)
